Assessment & Diagnosis

Comprehensive guidance and support for navigating the assessment and diagnosis process for a child with PDA, covering both private and public evaluation options.

PDA Assessments

In Canada, PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) is not always formally recognized and is typically assessed as part of an autism evaluation rather than as a separate diagnosis.

Private Pathway

Private autism assessments are conducted by registered psychologists, pediatricians, or specialized clinics. They are typically much faster than publicly funded options though they do come with out-of-pocket costs or require private insurance coverage.

Processes vary by province.

Public Pathway

Public autism assessments can be conducted by a pediatrician, psychologist, psychiatrist, speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, and social worker.  Please note that referrals are often required from your family doctor.

Public Pathway Process

Public autism assessments in Canada can be conducted by a multidisciplinary team (pediatrician, psychologist, speech-language pathologist, occupational therapist, and sometimes a social worker) or, in some provinces, by a single clinician such as a pediatrician, psychiatrist, or psychologist. For younger children, school-based or early intervention screenings may also feed into formal assessments. Wait times for public assessments can range from months to years depending on the province and region. Please click the link below to access the process for your province-

Private Pathway Process

Private autism assessments in Canada are typically conducted by qualified clinicians such as psychologists, pediatricians, or psychiatrists. The assessment process can vary by province and provider but usually involves developmental history, standardized testing, and observation. Unlike public assessments, private assessments often have shorter wait times, though costs can vary. PDA Affirming Directory

PDA North America maintains a directory of professionals who support individuals with PDA, including those who have completed their Certificate Programs. The organization does not vet the providers, has no financial interest, and makes no guarantees regarding quality of care. Visitors are encouraged to research providers independently.
