What is PDA?
PDA (Pathological Demand Avoidance) is a profile within the autism spectrum, estimated to affect around 20% of autistic individuals. It is considered a nervous system–based disability.
Children with PDA experience a strong, subconscious neurological drive for autonomy. This means they often find everyday demands extremely challenging — their nervous system becomes overwhelmed, triggering intense emotional responses. This may include meltdowns, physical withdrawal or shutdowns where they become quiet, unresponsive, or disengaged. These reactions are not intentional misbehavior—they are the child’s way of coping with anxiety and feeling out of control.
